Breathedge 2 Backpack Guide: Unlock It (Find the Painted Corpse), the Recipe, and How to Expand Capacity

This page covers how to unlock the backpack (find the painted corpse and put it by the locked box), the exact recipe, what capacity you get, and how to push it further with the Capacious upgrades. The backpack is the single most useful upgrade in the early game. It's what lets you carry more materials per trip, which means fewer return runs and longer expeditions. The catch is that it isn't a starter item and it isn't crafted on a whim — it has a specific unlock condition involving a corpse, and a recipe with one late-game material. Both are covered exactly below.

A corpse is the gate

How to Unlock the Backpack

The backpack isn't just another craft — its recipe only becomes available once you complete a small task:

Place the Painted Corpse next to the locked box.

In practice, that means finding a specific corpse and moving it. The painted corpse is located inside a wrecked ship in the police station area — the same region tied to the "Biometrics" achievement (finding a corpse near the police station and dragging it to a bench). Once you've found the painted corpse, bring it to the locked box and place it there, and the backpack recipe unlocks.

One honest note: the exact wrecked ship and the locked box aren't pinned to an exact coordinate in the current guides — they're in the police-station area, and the corpse is the one inside the wrecked ship. If you're working on the Biometrics achievement, you're already in the right neighborhood.

Four materials

The Recipe

Once unlocked, the backpack costs:

Crafting cost

  • Aluminum×4
  • Plastic×2
  • Titanium×4
  • Electric Tape×4

Craft it in the crafting menu (C) like any other item. Of the four materials, aluminum and electric tape are standard scavenge, and plastic is the game's recurring early bottleneck. The one to plan around is Titanium — it's a later-game material, so depending on how far you've pushed into the map, you may need to unlock more area before you can gather enough. (The materials page covers where each one comes from.)

Carry capacity

What the Backpack Gives You

The backpack is a carry-capacity upgrade — it raises how much you can haul in one trip. That matters more than it sounds:

  • Longer scavenging runs.

More capacity means you gather more before your bag fills up.

  • Fewer return trips.

The classic new-player frustration in Breathedge 2 is shuttling small loads home. The backpack is the direct fix.

  • Better expedition planning.

With more room, you can stock more supplies (water, food) alongside loot, which extends how far from base you can push.

It's the recommended first major upgrade in the early game for exactly this reason — every other upgrade benefits from you being able to haul more materials.

Not one-and-done

Expanding Capacity Further

The backpack isn't a one-and-done — you can push it further at the base's crafting stations:

  • +30

    Backpack Capacious (level 1)

    capacity

  • +35

    Leather Backpack Capacious (level 1)

    capacity

These are station upgrades applied at the Kettle (the base's crafting station), on top of the backpack itself. Stack them and your carry capacity grows well past the base item, which keeps paying off the deeper into the chapter you go.

It compounds

Why It's Worth Doing

The backpack is worth prioritizing because it compounds:

  • It saves time.

Every trip carries more, so the hours you'd spend backtracking go into exploring and scavenging instead.

  • It stacks with other capacity.

The "yank 10 moles" achievement grants Carry Weight +10, and it works alongside the backpack and the Capacious upgrades — they're additive, not competing.

  • It's a low-risk unlock.

The recipe costs a handful of materials; the only real work is finding the painted corpse, which you're near anyway if you're exploring the police-station area.

For the cost, nothing else in the early game improves your quality of life as much. If you're constantly full, this is the answer.

Three traps

Common Mistakes

  1. Assuming the starter bag is fine.

It fills up fast, and the moment materials start stacking, you'll be making sad little return trips. Get the backpack early.

  2. Not knowing the unlock is a corpse.

If you search the crafting list and the backpack isn't there, it's because you haven't placed the painted corpse by the locked box yet — that's the gate, not materials.

  3. Thinking the backpack is the ceiling.

The Capacious station upgrades push capacity much higher. Don't stop at the base item.
